Leading Herbal Supplement Provider Herb Pharm to Unveil New Look, Three New Products at Natural Products Expo West
Company will Launch a Dynamic New Logo and Label Design, as well as New Herbal Capsules, and a Softgel

Williams, Oregon – March 3, 2014

Herb Pharm, a leading grower of organic medicinal herbs and manufacturer of herbal healthcare products, will formally debut its new logo and label design this week at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, Calif. The new look is designed to help retailers better merchandise the products, while also welcoming consumers to the herbal category and helping facilitate product selection. The company also will debut at the show three new herbal supplements: Inflamma Response™ capsules, Passionflower capsules and Turmeric softgels.

Herb Pharm is implementing its new package design across the entire product line. The new scheme makes use of color-coded functional categories that are easy to spot and understand. The new color-coded system enables retailers to seamlessly and easily merchandise products by category, while also providing consumers an at-a-glance reference point intended to educate, facilitate product selection and eliminate confusion.

“We hear from so many people saying they have both a need and interest in healing herbs but simply don’t know where to start,” said Michael Gillette, director of marketing at Herb Pharm. “With our new color-coded labels and corresponding descriptive categories, we are making it easy to match an individual’s health need with an effective, medicinal herb, while also encouraging the experienced herb shopper to broaden their use of herbs to other areas of their personal health.”

With the new packaging, Herb Pharm’s single herbs and multi-herb compounds are organized into the following color-coded categories based on their primary function: Immune Support, Nervous System, Energy & Vitality, Respiratory System, System Restoration, Cleanse & Detoxify, and Optimal Well-Being.

In addition, the new Herb Pharm logo features a cleaner, more contemporary appearance, while also paying homage to the Greek mythological symbol known as the Rod of Asclepius, who was the Greek deity representing the healing arts and medicine. Normally depicted as a staff entwined with a single serpent, the serpent has been replaced with a climbing vine and leaves to symbolize the botanical origins of Herb Pharm’s products.

New Products

Also at the show, Herb Pharm will formally introduce the following new products:

    • Inflamma Response™ capsules (60 count, MSRP $28): These new capsules are

made from a blend of the Ayurvedic herbs Turmeric, Boswellia and Ginger, with the added support of traditional Chinese healing herbs, Reishi mushroom and Bupleurum. Each herb is extracted with natural liquids such as water to ensure a broad, concentrated array of potent, therapeutic compounds without the use of synthetic chemical solvents. Naturally concentrated, the vegetarian capsules are made from plant cellulose and don’t contain gelatin.

    • Passionflower capsules (60 count, MSRP $20): Made with a combination of flowering Passionflower herb extract and certified organic whole herb to ensure a broad spectrum of Passionflower’s compounds to maximize its therapeutic benefits. Traditionally used as a calming herb in Europe and later the Americas, Passionflower is known to provide support for occasional and mild anxiety.*

    • Turmeric softgels (60 count, MSRP $28): Well-known as a culinary spice and key ingredient in curry and yellow mustard, Turmeric also has a long history of healing in the traditional medicine systems of China and India, and modern clinical research confirms a variety of its health applications. Turmeric softgels are made from a comprehensive formula of certified organic extracts of whole Turmeric root, as well as organic Black Pepper extract to enhance the body’s response.

All three supplements are vegan and vegetarian, gluten-free, non-GMO and laboratory verified for purity and potency.

“With both the new products and the new look, we are trying to make our efficacious herbal supplements more accessible to a broader range of consumers,” said Michael Gillette, director of marketing at Herb Pharm. “The new herbal capsules and softgel will provide those consumers with an easier and more familiar way to take safe, effective herbal supplements.”

Those interested in learning more about the new packaging design and products may do so at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, Calif., March 7-9, 2014, booth #1724. Among those representing the company on Saturday will be one of the most trusted clinicians in botanical medicine, Aviva Romm, MD.

All three new products are available now to retailers nationwide, and the new packaging has already begun rolling out. For more information about the entire Herb Pharm product line, please visit www.herb-pharm.com/store

HERB PHARM LAUNCHES CHRONIC STRESS REMEDY
Introducing STRESS MANAGER™ Liquid Herbal Compound

Williams, Oregon - Herb Pharm, manufacturer of America's number one selling brand of liquid herbal extracts, today announced the introduction of STRESS MANAGER™ liquid herbal compound, created from a combination of herbs known to relieve anxiety, calm nerves and relieve overall chronic stress.

All stress is not bad! It is our response to stress that keeps us alive and alert. Normal stress comes and goes. It is typically short-lived and our recovery from it is fairly rapid. However, it is the long-term, chronic stress - the kind that we experience day-in and day-out, and which feels inescapable - which causes an overload for our nervous and endocrine systems.

David Bunting, Herbal Affairs Manager at Herb Pharm, said, "The deleterious effects of chronic stress include reduced immunity, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular manifestations, fatigue, poor digestion, mental and psychic anomalies like loss of concentration, anxiety, depression and insomnia. While chronic stress may be inescapable, there are steps we can take to counter its effects."

STRESS MANAGER™, Herb Pharm's new liquid compound, includes herbs classified as Adaptogens which are particularly well suited to helping us deal with chronic and excessive stress. STRESS MANAGER™ includes:

  • Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) appears to enhance resistance to overwork and environmental factors such as heat and cold
  • Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used for thousands of years in China and Japan as a longevity tonic, increases oxygenation of the blood and has been used to curb altitude sickness
  • Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum & O. gratissimum) is used in Ayurvedic medicine to clear the mind and improve memory, enhance immunity, strengthen the nervous system and improve digestion and absorption
  • Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) has held a place in Asian and Scandinavian traditional medicine for enhancing strength and physical endurance, longevity and fertility. Rhodiola is known to help with stress related states that manifest in disturbed sleep, poor appetite or over-eating, irritability, mild depression, headache and general fatigue
  • Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), like Reishi, is said to quiet the spirit and calm the heart, which makes it valuable with neuroses, irritability, memory loss and insomnia

As a liquid herbal extract blend, STRESS MANAGER™ is optimally absorbed by the body and is designed to steadily address both the mental and physical aspects of chronic stress without the jolting effects of short-lived stimulant ingredients and sugar.

STRESS MANAGER™ can be found in health food stores and healthcare practitioner offices, or at our online store: Stress Manager™ Product Information

Herb Pharm Launches Therapeutic Herb Capsule Products

Goldenseal, Milk Thistle and Saw Palmetto Join Herb Pharm’s Capsule Lineup

Williams, Oregon – Leading herbal healthcare products provider Herb Pharm today announced the introduction of three new herbs in capsules.  The three products – Goldenseal, Milk Thistle, and Saw Palmetto – join Herb Pharm’s two existing herb capsule products, Pharma Kava® and Super Echinacea®.

Renowned herbalist Ed Smith, co-founder and co-owner of Herb Pharm said, “Organic cultivation and sustainable wild-harvesting practices, proper plant-part harvesting, and broad-spectrum extraction without the use of synthetic, environmentally-harmful solvents are essential to all the herbal products we produce at Herb Pharm, and our new capsule products are no exception.”

Wild populations of Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) have been on the decline for many years, which is why only organically cultivated Goldenseal is used for Herb Pharm’s Goldenseal Capsules. Each vegetarian capsule contains 540 mg of Goldenseal rhizomes and rootlets, which are ground and encapsulated without any further processing.

Milk Thistle is restorative and supportive to the liver. Herb Pharm’s Milk Thistle Capsules are made from the dark, mature seeds of Silybum marianum plants, which are grown without herbicides or pesticides. Prior to extraction, the seeds are defatted under pressure rather than the common chemical defatting method using petroleum ether. Extraction is performed with pharmacopeial-grade alcohol and not with methanol or ethyl-acetate as is the case with most commercial Milk Thistle powders. The result is a very pure, broad-spectrum extract that delivers 140 mg of silymarin per capsule.

Saw Palmetto is a popular prostate support herb for men. Herb Pharm’s Saw Palmetto Softgels are made from the dark (deep purple to black) berries of Serenoa repens palms. While most makers of Saw Palmetto are content with unripened, green berries, Herb Pharm’s berries are harvested only after they fully develop their health-promoting fatty acids and phytosterols. Extraction is done with pharmacopeial-grade alcohol in lieu of the commonly used, highly toxic solvent hexane. The use of alcohol also enables Herb Pharm to capture higher levels of important sterols, which are often sacrificed in other extractions such as the supercritical carbon dioxide method.

Herb Pharm's new herbal capsules began arriving in natural products stores in mid-July. Suggested retail prices range from $21.00 to $25.00 for a 60-count bottle.

Still Herbal After All These Years
Herb Pharm, America's #1 Herbal Extract Company, Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

Williams, Oregon, February 26, 2009 – When the roots of a company are established in fertile ground, the growth is vigorous & healthy. And so it is with Herb Pharm – a company that began 30 years ago with passion and principles continues to thrive today as a certified organic grower of medicinal herbs, producing America’s #1 selling line of liquid herbal extracts.

On March 8, 1979, Herb Pharm took root in Williams, Oregon. Back in those days, the "lab" was in the kitchen of Ed Smith and Sara Katz, the company's founders and owners. Their first commercial product, Herbal Ed’s Salve, was infused in a turkey roaster, bottles were filled by hand with a beaker, and labels were hand-typed. Accompanied by a handful of apprentices who lived in Ed and Sara's house, days and nights were spent planting, harvesting and grinding the roots, leaves, flowers and seeds that grew in their garden and the surrounding mountains to make their liquid herbal extracts.

A History of Quality
“In those days, our little company was an alternative to the rather poor quality and limited array of medicinal herb products available in the 70's,” says Herb Pharm Chairman and co-founder, Ed Smith. “Back then, we spoke constantly and energetically of the importance of using organic, high-quality herbs as opposed to the overdried plant fiber that most of the existing companies were using in their products.”

Sara Katz, co-founder and President adds, “Then as now, we focused on collecting the best quality herbs we could, hand-picking the most medicine-laden plant parts of the plant at their peak of readiness and at the best time of day for harvest. In those days we even drove 100 miles round trip to fill our jugs with solar distilled water for our extracts!”

Before starting Herb Pharm, Ed lived five winters in the South American jungle learning about plants from native healers. He practiced herbal medicine at a missionary clinic in Guatemala, and studied every herb book he could get his hands on.

Ed, popularly known as “Herbal Ed” began formulating proprietary herbal compounds, using knowledge from his herbal studies and his extensive travels in over 60 countries. This also led to Herb Pharm introducing onto the American herb market herbs like Ginkgo, Milk Thistle, Chaste Tree, Butterbur, Jambul and Khella.

Ever Green

Herb Pharm ‘walks its talk’ of supporting socially and environmentally responsible practices. 100% of its electricity consumption is offset through participation in the Blue Sky renewable energy program, which utilizes off-site wind generators and geo-thermal heat capture. Herb Pharm has also received Salmon Safe certification for developing a long-term strategy to enhance and preserve riparian areas on its farm and wild lands, and for its ecologically sustainable agricultural practices.

Herb Pharm’s certified organic farm is located in a rural valley of the Siskiyou Mountains in southern Oregon. Bordered in part by a living fence-line of medicinal trees such as Ginkgo, Hawthorn, Thuja and Chaste Berry, in summer the farm is ablaze with multi-hued fields of Echinacea, Chamomile, Calendula and over 100 species of medicinal plants that are cultivated for use in Herb Pharm’s extraction facility. The farm is also a site for practical research on the propagation and cultivation of endangered wild medicinal plants, and is a recognized Botanical Sanctuary by United Plant Savers (UpS) -- a non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve and restore wild-growing native medicinal plants of the US and Canada.

Herbal Ed explains, “As years go by, we continue to look for ways to improve the quality of our herbal medicines. While we are growing more and more of our herbs on our organic farm, our environmental commitments also include harvesting wild herbs in a responsible and sustainable manner – what we’ve termed “Custom Wildcrafted™”.

From the '70s to the new millennium Herb Pharm continues to revere and follow the time-proven wisdom of traditional herbal medicine, but also integrates that wisdom with the herbal sciences of the 21st Century. In so doing, the company looks beyond an herb's so-called "active compound" and instead produces "full-spectrum extracts" that are rich in the aroma, flavor and bio-activity of the original herbs themselves."

Planting the Future
Says Co-owner Katz, “We remain committed to herbal extracts that represent the full-spectrum constituents of each individual plant. We are sincerely grateful and thank all of our customers who have used our products through these years. As we continue to sink our herbal roots deeper and deeper, we will constantly strive to bring our customers the finest herbal extracts available anywhere.”

It's an approach that customers seem to agree with, and is a key reason why Herb Pharm is the best selling line of liquid herbal extracts in America. After 30 years of manufacturing quality herbal medicines, Herb Pharm continues to produce primarily liquid herbal extracts, with currently over 250 products. Throughout 2009, Herb Pharm will be participating in a variety of events to celebrate it’s 30th Anniversary. These events include: exhibiting and showcasing its new products at industry tradeshows and consumer green-living events; hosting the annual United Plant Savers Conference, at Herb Pharm on May 30th; and sponsorship of this year’s International Herb Symposium in Wheaton, MA, June 19-21.

Southern Oregon’s Herb Pharm to Host “Planting The Future” Event

Williams, OR --The United Plant Savers (UpS), the non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, conserving and restoring native medicinal plants, will be hosting its 2009 conference “Planting The Future” at Herb Pharm’s farm in Williams, Oregon, on Saturday, May 30, 2009. Renowned herbalists from around the country will lead workshops on Herb Pharm’s certified organic farm at the all-day event. This is the fourth time the educational symposium will be held at Herb Pharm, which is also a designated UpS Botanical Sanctuary.

UpS is on the front line of generating awareness about the vulnerable status of many “At Risk” plants. Over-harvesting and environmental impact have caused an ever-increasing shortage of plant resources. The work of UpS is to research, educate and protect the interests of plants and their habitats, while offering education and support for all herbal enthusiasts ranging from consumers to practitioners.

Sara Katz, co-founder of Herb Pharm, was recently named President of United Plant Savers Board of Directors. “UpS conferences are unique in that they combine a day bursting with enthusiasm for the many outstanding classes on medicinal herbs that are offered, with an exceptional spirit of celebration for the healing plants.” Says Katz, “The Herb Pharm farm, with its renowned Education Garden and fields of medicinal herb crops, including many herbs on the UpS 'At Risk List', is in every respect an ideal place to hold such a conference.”

Activities will include Plant Walks and multiple workshops, all designed to educate on a wide range of issues affecting many vital American native plants. Each year this event attracts hundreds. Additional details are available at 1-800-348-4372 ext. 100 or contacting United Plant Savers directly at (802) 476-6467, or on the web: www.unitedplantsavers.org.

Herb Pharm Co-founder Sara Katz Named President of United Plant Savers

Williams, Oregon – Herb Pharm founder, co-owner and President Sara Katz has recently been appointed President of Vermont-based United Plant Savers (UpS), a non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve and restore wild-growing native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada. Sara previously served as the organization’s Treasurer and Secretary, and she and Herb Pharm have been working with UpS for over ten years.

Herb Pharm's and UpS' missions have always been closely entwined and Herb Pharm's organic farm in Oregon is designated as a UpS Botanical Sanctuary.  There they research and develop methods for cultivating at-risk medicinal plant species. This provides Herb Pharm with environmentally-responsible supplies of these threatened herbs, and also contributes to their conservation in the wild and their preservation for the enjoyment of future generations.

Herb Pharm's farm has been the site of several UpS "Planting the Future" conferences, which bring together prominent herbalists from around the country to lead seminars, herb walks, and other educational activities designed to raise awareness of environmentally threatened medicinal plants.

In addition to her involvement with Herb Pharm and United Plant Savers, Sara contributes time to several environmental groups and serves on the board of the American Herbal Products Association. She has been working with medicinal herbs for 30 years and, with Ed Smith, founded Herb Pharm in 1979.

Commenting on Sara’s appointment as President, Lynda LeMole, Executive Director of UpS said, “I cannot imagine a more impassioned and dedicated person than Sara, and it is a great joy to share leadership with her.  She has worked energetically over the last ten years with UpS to protect our native medicinals.”

When asked about her new role, Sara commented, “Being asked to be president of plant-saving UpS is a great honor. I feel deeply connected to the spirit and work of this organization, which is made up of people who passionately love the healing plants.”

About United Plant Savers:
United Plant Savers is supported by concerned plant lovers, scientists, herbalists and activists whose mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitats. UpS’ team of knowledgeable plant professionals has joined together with herbal product manufacturers and government officials to design a newly updated and practical standardized scoring matrix to assess those plants at-risk.  There are now 19 plants on the “At-Risk” List in North America alone, including the now-common names of Goldenseal, Echinacea, American Ginseng and Wild Yam. Herb Pharm Launches Two New Alcohol-Free Herbal Glycerite Extracts

Green Tea & Rhodiola Glycerites

Williams, Oregon - Herb Pharm, manufacturer of America's number one selling brand of liquid herbal extracts, today announced the introduction of two new alcohol-free herbal glycerite extracts -- Green Tea and Rhodiola root.  For consumers who prefer liquid herbal extracts, they will now have broad access to alcohol-free liquid extracts of these two very popular herbs. Both products began shipping to natural products retailers in early April, and are also available online at www.herb-pharm.com.

Green Tea is a rich source of free-radical scavenging antioxidants. Herb Pharm's alcohol-free Green Tea glycerite is made from the young leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which are certified organically grown at Ambootia Tea Plantation in Darjeeling, India. To assure optimal quality, the leaves are hand-harvested at their peak of potency and then promptly heat-dried to stabilize and preserve their antioxidant catechins and flavonoids.

Rhodiola root has a long history of use in enhancing mental and physical energy and stamina. Herb Pharm's alcohol-free Rhodiola glycerite is prepared from the dried roots of Rhodiola rosea plants, which are harvested in their wild native habitat in the Russian Arctic Circle. To assure optimal extraction of Rhodiola's antioxidant flavonoids and delicate rose flavor, the roots are hand-harvested at their peak of potency, are carefully shade-dried, and are then shipped directly to our facility for prompt extraction.

"Our alcohol-free herbal glycerites are very similar to our liquid herbal extracts and they can be used in the same way," says medical herbalist, Ed Smith, founder and co-owner of Herb Pharm. "The difference is a slightly adjusted extraction process which enables us to extract the herbs with natural, GMO-free coconut-derived glycerine instead of alcohol."

Second Annual Herbday Approaches
Events Being Held in Southern Oregon

Williams, Oregon – HerbDay is a coordinated series of independently produced public educational events celebrating the importance of herbs and herbalism, occurring this year on Saturday, October 13, 2007.

The ‘perfect storm’ of a rural environment, a Mediterranean climate, and being a long-time quintessential back-to-the-land destination, Southern Oregon has for many decades been a center for high quality, organic herbal medicines. Today some of the most notable herbal companies in the U.S. are right here in the Applegate Valley, including:

  1. Herb Pharm: the leading manufacturer of liquid herbal extracts made from organically grown herbs,
largely grown on their own certified organic herb farm in Williams.
  2. Pacific Botanicals: the most experienced and diversified certified organic medicinal herb farm in the U.S;
their product line includes over 200 medicinal herbs and spices in whole, cut, tea-bag cut or powder forms.
  3. Horizon Herbs: leading growers of organically certified medicinal herb seed and plants grown on their own farm,
including indigenous herb seeds from the Native American, Ayurvedic and Chinese traditions.
  4. Goodwin Creek Gardens: a family run nursery that grows a wonderful mix of heirloom and contemporary
cultivars of both useful and ornamental plants strictly grown with organic soil ingredients, organic fertilizers,
and (though seldom needed) organic pesticides.
  5. Naturespirit Herbs: harvesters of wild sea vegetables and medicinal herbs as well as clinical herbalists
and producers of high quality herbal medicines.

These five companies collectively represent over 130 years of thriving herbal business in the little valley of Applegate alone. Add the various herbal practitioners, stores, and other companies which carry these products, and it is clear that medicinal herbs are an integral part of our local community and culture.

HerbDay was conceived of by five nonprofit organizations with interests in herbs and herbalism (the HerbDay Coalition), to raise public awareness about the significance of herbs in our lives and the many ways herbs can be used safely and creatively for health, beauty care, and culinary enjoyment.

The first HerbDay was held on Saturday, October 14, 2006, and brought together individuals, businesses, and organizations that share a love and passion for herbs and herbal medicine. These include herbalists and healthcare providers using herbs in their practice; authors, teachers and lecturers with expertise in herbs; herbal product manufacturers and marketers; retailers and distributors of herbal goods; botanical gardens, parks, and schools — and most importantly, the people and families who love to use herbs!

Herb Pharm will be hosting an Open House on HerbDay from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at their facility at 20260 Williams Hwy. in Williams, Oregon. Tours will be held on the hours of 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. For directions please call (541) 846-6262 x.100 or visit www.herb-pharm.com. Horizon Herbs, located at 3350 Cedar Flat Road in Williams, will open their doors from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and will be offering a 10% discount off their regular prices for seeds and plants at their nursery.
