Are herbal extracts ok for everyone to take? Is there anyone that should avoid them due to health conditions?

We love talking about herbs and herbalism, and we especially love answering your questions about those topics. That's why we brought in our team of herbal experts to respond to some of the most common questions and concerns we hear.

Our herbalists have decades of combined experience working with herbs — and the people who take them. They answer your most pressing questions, in our regular column “Ask an Herbalist.”

Are herbal extracts ok for everyone to take? Is there anyone that should avoid them due to health conditions?

In general, herbal extracts are for everyone! That being said, each person and each herb are different. In terms of age, we don’t recommend any of our products for babies under 1 year old, unless instructed by your pediatrician. On the opposite end, some older adults can become more sensitive to products in general as they get older and may require adjustments to serving sizes.

If you have any health conditions (or even if you aren’t experiencing any), it is vital to always read and follow the Suggested Use and Cautions on the label of each product. We carefully research each herb to determine our products' customized serving sizes, as well as any cautions that should be noted at that serving range. We reference the frequently updated Botanical Safety Handbook, 2nd Edition (written and maintained by the American Herbal Products Association), to inform these Caution statements and always list any known contraindications in this section on the label of each product. The Suggested Uses and Cautions of our products vary as much as the herbs we use to make them, so please be sure to read and follow what is written on each product label.

As always, follow the directions of your qualified healthcare practitioner and their instructions regarding herbs and your specific health needs first. If you would like to find a practitioner near you or those available for distance sessions, you can find a Naturopath through the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians or a Registered Herbalist through the American Herbalist Guild.
