5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day, Every Day
We love Earth Day! This special celebration is a great reminder to live gently and in more harmony with the Earth. But really, we think every day should be Earth Day. As the world's first Regenerative Organic Certified® herb farm, we know that it takes both big strides from businesses like us, and intentional daily choices from all of us individually to create real change in the world.
Whether you're new to sustainability, or deepening an existing practice, here are some great ideas to inspire you.
1. Shop the Local Farmers Market
Farmers markets typically open around May, just as the growing season kicks off. Shopping locally reduces the carbon footprint of your food, supports Regenerative Organic Certified® and Certified Organic growers in your area, and reconnects you with the origins of what you eat. As an added bonus, you might even come across some familiar herbs and plant starts you can plant in your own garden at home! Remember to bring your own reusable bags to keep the whole process low-waste.
2. Host a Clothing Swap or Upcycle Night
By now, many of us know that fast fashion has a huge environmental impact, from water and microplastics to energy use and human welfare.1 One way to fight against that system is through the power of community! Invite friends and family over for a clothing swap party, where everyone brings their unwanted clothes. You never know, one person's “it's just not my color” could be someone else's treasure. You can also host an upcycle night: hemming jeans, turning them into shorts, dyeing faded tees, or patching jackets can be a lot of fun.
3. Switch to Reusable Utensils On-the-Go
Plastic cutlery is used for minutes, but it can sit in a landfill for up to 1,000 years.2 Keep a small set of bamboo, stainless steel, or even just your regular silverware in your bag, desk drawer, or car console. It's a tiny switch that can make a big impact.
4. Dispose of Old Electronics Responsibly
E-waste is a fast-growing waste stream, and it's loaded with toxic materials that leach into soil and water. Before tossing out your old phones, laptops, or cables, look up your local e-waste recycling program. Many retailers, like Best Buy, have a free drop-off program, and some manufacturers have a mail-back program, too.
5. Spend Time Outside
It sounds simple, because it is! Spending time in nature can foster your connection and care for the planet that no amount of information can replicate. Take a walk in a local park, check out your local botanical garden, go for a hike, or just sit outside and breathe. Herbalists, farmers, and plant-lovers like us have known for centuries, when we feel connected to nature, we want to take care of it!
