With the turning of fall and cooler days ahead, it’s natural to feel the draw to spend more time at home and start getting cozy. Many herbalists relish this time of year because the rush of summer harvest season is over, leaving us with more free time to hunker down and relax with some of our favorite herbal allies.
Read on if you’re looking for simple tips on getting cozy with herbs at home this fall.
Nothing is more comforting than a warm cup of homemade broth. It may sound time-consuming to prepare your own, but you can easily make big batches in a slow cooker and freeze jars for use later. Regardless of what type of broth you like, dried herbs and mushrooms are wonderful additions.
Simply bundle a sachet of your favorite kitchen herbs in muslin and toss a handful of your favorite dried culinary mushrooms into the pot as you cook your broth. If homemade broth feels too complicated, you can spice up store-bought broth with herbs and mushrooms when you reheat it on the stove as well. We encourage you to try our yummy Astragalus Miso Mug recipe too!
An instant way to make your home feel cozier is to light a couple of candles. To add an “herbalist’s touch”: sprinkle some dried Rose petals or Lavender buds on top of the wax. If using unscented candles, add a few drops of essential oil once the wax has melted a bit.
It can be fun to create an intentional space for them, too. You can put a small woven cloth or piece of fabric underneath them, harvest some fall branches from the outside and maybe add a picture or another object that brings you comfort. This turns the simple act of lighting candles into a cozy ritual, warming up your home as the seasons change.
Soaking in the tub is one of our favorite ways to warm up on a cool fall evening. You can instantly elevate your tub time by incorporating herbs, too. Simply bundle some of your favorite skin-friendly herbs in a sachet and “steep” them in the bath water while you soak, or prepare a pot of concentrated tea ahead of time and pour it into the bath water right before soaking.
For an extra special touch, add whole herbs directly into the bath after it’s ready (such as Rose petals, Lemongrass stalks, Basil leaves, or Lavender buds). While this method creates a beautiful soaking experience, be sure that you have a proper strainer, so your drain does not get clogged when you finish your soak.
As the primary growing season comes to an end, now is the perfect time to reflect on your gardening feats and falls from the season and “plant seeds” (metaphorically) for what you hope to grow next year. Take note of what thrived in your garden, and equally, what did not do as well (be sure to note why if you have an idea).
These notes are invaluable come springtime when you’re getting ready to start planting again. You can make an annual ritual of getting cozy by the fire with a cup of tea, Cinnamon pine cones and your gardening journal, giving yourself time to reflect and envision what you hope will thrive next year (or anything new you want to experiment with growing).
The simplest herbal ritual, and every herbalist’s favorite, is curling up with a cozy herbal drink on a cool fall day. We created our newest Warm Cinnamon Cider recipe for just that. It’s a sweet and deliciously spiced drink you can enjoy daily – or whenever the craving for a fall beverage strikes. It’s easy to prepare for yourself or with friends, and instantly warms the bones on a chilly day.
Get the recipe here and be sure to save it for sipping before your upcoming fall feasts, too!
