Unplug & Create: 3 Nature Crafts for Kids’ Summer Break

Here’s a great way to keep kids engaged this summer, no screens needed! These activities are fun for nearly all ages, with little ones just needing a bit of extra supervision and a few small modifications.

These crafts will encourage kiddos to spend more time outside, get curious about their surroundings, express themselves, and they may even have a little something to show off when they head back to school!

Herbal Ice Cubes

Here’s a DIY with endless possibilities for play! When the summer heat strikes, keep the whole family cool with herbal ice cubes. They’re perfect for fancy fairy tea parties, can be used in a watery sensory dish for little ones, and encourage hydration (who doesn’t want to sip on a glass of water with pretty ice cubes?). To make them, simply add edible flowers or herbs to an ice cube tray, fill with water, and freeze.

Some herbs and edible flowers to use: Violets, Calendula petals, Chamomile, Lavender, Rose petals, Mint, or Basil. Please remember that not all flowers are safe to eat, so be sure to only use food-friendly flowers!

Pressed Flower Bookmarks

Keep kids entertained with a DIY that will encourage summer reading, and possibly even drum up some excitement about back-to-school season. Collect a handful of herbs, plants, and flowers. Then, press them between two pieces of wax paper using a few heavy books as a weight on top. They should be dried and fully flat in about a week. Once they’re ready, arrange and glue them onto a heavy cardstock bookmark and seal with Mod Podge. A hole punch and a ribbon at the top add a lovely flair.

Some herbs and flowers to use: Cosmos, Pansies, Daisies, Queen Anne’s Lace, Yarrow, Snapdragons, Sage, Parsley, Ferns, Clovers, or Marigolds.

Making Flower Prints

What’s summer break without a dash of controlled chaos? This is a great craft for designing tea towels and they make excellent gifts for friends and grandparents! First, gather some herbs, plants, and flowers from your garden or the farmers’ market. The best plants are slightly flat already and rich in color! Then, place the herb or flower face-down on a light-colored tea towel, cover with parchment or wax paper, and gently hammer to pound the pigment into the fabric. Kids will love showing off the big reveal at the end!

Some herbs and flowers to use: Violets, Cosmos, Zinnias, Pansies, Daisies, Queen Anne’s Lace, Ferns, Clovers, or Marigolds.
