Where do your herbs come from?
We love talking about herbs and herbalism, and we especially love answering your questions about those topics. That's why we brought in our team of herbal experts to respond to some of the most common questions and concerns we hear.
Our herbalists have decades of combined experience working with herbs — and the people who take them. They answer your most pressing questions, in our regular column “Ask an Herbalist.”
Where do your herbs come from?
At Herb Pharm, we're serious about sourcing because we know we can't make quality products without quality herbs. About 37% of our herbs are grown on our 255+ acres of Regenerative Organic Certified® farmland in southern Oregon. Our farms are in the Applegate Valley and because we are situated between the Cascade and Siskiyou mountain ranges, we experience some pretty good weather for farming. In fact, it creates a microclimate like that of the Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and wet, relatively mild winters.
Because all herbs can't thrive in our southern Oregon microclimate, what we can't grow here, we ethically source from around the world as some herbs can only grow in certain habitats and conditions. For example, Maca can only grow at very high altitudes and is native to the Andes mountains. Rhodiola needs very cold conditions to thrive, like in Siberia, northern China, and the Arctic. To reduce strain on wild stands of Rhodiola from overharvesting, we are able to get our Rhodiola from organic growers in Canada. For some herbs used in traditional Chinese herbalism, such as Dong Quai, Asian Ginseng, and Astragalus, we have found they are best sourced from their native region in China.
For other herbs, we have a large network of wildcrafters, growers, and brokers that supply us with herbs from all over the globe. This allows us to get high-quality herbs and support those local communities that keep herbalism alive. We also partner with some farmers who grow herbs for us. For instance, we've partnered with Appalachian Sustainable Development through the Sustainable Herbs Program to connect us with an organic forest farm that grows our stock of Goldenseal roots over a decades long project.
All our sourcing and growing partners believe in the same sustainability ethics and high-quality practices that we do and commit to our standards before we work with them. Our Quality team keeps everything in check by inspecting all batches of herbs, fresh or dried, that come to us, even those from our own farms!
All of these practices combined with more rigorous quality testing of the finished product result in high-quality products you can trust.
