3 Sleep Myths Debunked
Picture this: you crawl into bed after an exhausting day, ready for that perfect 8 hours everyone is always
talking about, but your mind starts racing as soon as your head hits the pillow. Or, you fall asleep just
fine…until you’re staring at the alarm clock at 3 a.m. Sub-par sleep happens to us all from time to time!
The truth is, there are so many common myths about sleep and supplements. Let’s take a look at 3 common sleep
myths, and best of all, see which herbal allies can help you get that dreamy night’s rest.*
Myth 1: “You Can ‘Catch Up on Sleep Later”
Bad news for all of the weekend sleep warriors! If you’re pushing sleep from the work week to the
weekend, unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way. Getting extra sleep on the weekend doesn’t undo
the impact of short sleep throughout the week. According to a study done in 2016, it takes 4 days for
the body to recover from just 1 hour of sleep debt.1 And, sleeping in late on one day can
make it harder to get to bed later that evening, pushing the cycle of sleep debt forward. Instead of
trying to catch up on sleep, try to stick to a consistent sleep ritual and don’t sleep later than two
hours past when you normally wake up, even on the weekends.
Myth 2: “More Sleep Always Means Better Sleep”
While the CDC recommends adults get at least 7 hours of sleep per night2, and sleep duration
is important, it’s not the sole critical factor in sufficient rest. Rather than trying to stay in bed
and sleep for as long as you’re able, consider your sleep quality. Fragmented sleep with numerous
awakenings can interfere with your body’s ability to move through the sleep cycle, decreasing time spent
in the restorative stages of sleep.
Myth 3: “All Sleep Supplements Have Melatonin”
Did you know melatonin is a hormone that’s naturally produced by the pineal gland in your brain? While it
plays a crucial role in regulating your body’s sleep-wake cycle (a.k.a. circadian rhythm), you can still
get a great night’s sleep without adding a melatonin supplement to your nightly rituals. Many sleep
aids, including herbal options, are melatonin-free and instead lean on herbs like Valerian, Passionflower, or California Poppy.*
