What is the Lymphatic System? A Simple Guide to How it Works
The lymphatic system is having a moment in popular culture right now! From lymphatic drainage massages to dry
brushing routines, you’ve probably heard of the lymphatic system, but do you know exactly what it does?
In this post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of this vital network, how it works, and how you can best
support your lymphatic system with a healthy lifestyle.
Basic Anatomy
The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system. Its primary functions are to transport lymphatic
fluid through the lymphatic channels, filter lymph fluid through the nodes, and return it to the
bloodstream for later elimination. Nearly all body systems and organs have lymphatic channels to collect
byproducts for elimination. Interestingly enough though, lymph in the liver and intestines make up about
80% of the lymph fluid in the body!1
Components of the Lymphatic System
- • Lymph fluid
- • Lymphatic vessels and plexuses
- • Lymph nodes
- • Lymphatic cells
- • Lymphoid organic
Immune System Support Functions
The lymphatic system also supports the immune system.1 You have lymph nodes all throughout
your body, and you can think of these as checkpoints where lymph fluid is filtered. Within the lymph
nodes, immune cells help to identify and respond as needed. As the lymph fluid circulates, it carries
immune cells to areas where they’re needed and moves waste or foreign particles away from the tissues.
Lifestyle Tips for Lymphatic Flow
Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system does not have a pump. This system relies on movement and muscle
contraction to keep lymph flowing. Therefore, living an active life and moving your body regularly is
key to stimulating the lymphatic system! Try simple movements, like walking, stretching, or gentle
bouncing on a rebounder. Lymph is also mostly made of fluid, so staying hydrated keeps it
moving.2 Other things, like deep breathing and gentle massage help the lymphatic system,
