Our connection to Earth is common ground we can all stand on. Everything we do at Herb Pharm is to protect the Earth and preserve herbal knowledge and resources for generations to come. We believe our relationship with nature is symbiotic—we support Earth, and the Earth supports us. Issues like the climate crisis can feel big and out of our control sometimes, but every action you take matters. Here are five simple ways you can protect the planet every day—not just Earth Day!
See trash? Pick it up—it’s that easy. Removing litter makes our communities more beautiful and helps to preserve natural spaces like parks and walking trails. It also keeps garbage from disrupting the plants, water and wildlife in the area.
Keep yourself safe while picking up litter by wearing gloves and consider using a trash picker. Properly dispose of everything you find either by taking it to the landfill or a recycling center. Wash your hands well afterward, too.
There’s no better feeling than getting together with a group of like-minded people and doing something positive for your community. Look for volunteer groups in your area that are tackling environmental issues.
Recently, Herb Pharm employees got together for a river cleanup on a popular Applegate River wayside near our farm. You can also volunteer at community gardens or join your local native plant society.
Sometimes, protecting the planet is more about what you don’t do. Make the commitment to stop using pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. We grow everything you see on our lush farms without any of those things! You can get mulch from the garden store and make your own compost—and you’ll have much healthier soil. It’ll also keep all those chemicals from washing into the water supply.
Caring for the soil and water is just one element of protecting the planet. According to the USDA, 35% of the world’s food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce!1 Support pollinators by turning your yard into a safe habitat for birds, bees, butterflies, moths and other wildlife.
Our regenerative organic farms are an Official Monarch Waystation and Certified Bee-Friendly. You can definitely tell if you walk out into a blooming field in the spring or summer! Create more biodiversity in your yard by planting lots of native flowers. You can also participate in No Mow May, and don’t mow your lawn for the whole month. This provides a wonderful habitat for early season pollinators.
Of course, reducing consumption is an important part of protecting the planet. If you can reuse what you already have, do it! A properly washed tomato sauce jar is just as effective as a brand-new plastic container.
If you do want to spring for something new, be wary of greenwashing and try to purchase from companies that are doing their part for the environment. A company’s B Corp status can tell you what their social and environmental impact really is. You can find other B Corps like us using the Find a B Corp search tool.
