How Your Digestive System Works + Herbal Tips*

What really happens when you take a bite of food? Your digestive system is like a long conveyor belt that converts your culinary delights into fuel your body can actually use. And it’s not just your stomach and intestines, either! There are many unsung heroes of the digestive system, from the salivary glands that ramp up your digestive fire to the liver and pancreas processing all of those carbs, proteins, and fats.

In this post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of this vital system, how it works, and how you can best support your digestive system with a healthy lifestyle.

Basic Anatomy

The digestive system is made up of the gastrointestinal tract (a series of hollow organs that join together) along with the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. Everything works together to break down nutrients from food and beverages so your body can absorb it and use it for energy, growth, and cell repair. Food moves through your GI tract by a process called peristalsis. From there, glands in your stomach release stomach acid and enzymes to break down food before it gets processed by the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder and absorbed by the small and large intestines, and waste products become stool.

Components of the Digestive System

Mouth Salivary Glands Esophagus
Liver Gallbladder Stomach
Pancreas Large Intestine Small Intestine
Appendix Rectum Anus

The Importance of Gut Health

Caring for your digestive system means caring for every other system in your body, because the digestive system is the way your body gets energy and nutrients. Your gut health also impacts everything from your immune system to your mood. Around 70% of the immune system is housed in the gut,1 and it’s often called your “second brain” because of the gut-brain axis.2 Plus, if you’ve ever had an upset stomach, gas, or bloating, you know a well-functioning digestive system makes daily life a whole lot more comfortable.

Lifestyle Tips for Better Digestion

Exercies to help digestion

If digestive health is top of mind for you, take the herbal approach! Start by taking bitters before your meals to wake up your digestive system. Some favorites are Artichoke, Dandelion, Gentian, or even our Better Bitters™ sprays. Also prepare recipes with digestion-supporting herbs like Cumin, Fennel, and Cardamom. If you’re in the mood for a mocktail, you could try our Ginger Gastro Bliss recipe! Gentle daily movement helps as well, with activities like walking or yoga twists.3*
